Era of Profound Irresponsibility

Well, I don't know about you, but, I am hard pressed to find something as, if not more, entertaining than the US politics this month. I don't mean to marginalise the world events and all their moral denomination, but really what competes with this stuff, eh?

The absence of concern when politicians agreed to funnel almost $800 billion into 10 US banks last fall (displaying the absurd US Treasury modicum that paying 10 banks would protect the exposure of the 3 insolvent banks..did you see Citi Bank this week?) adding to the alarming US debt already ballooning from the two wars. Quite frankly I think US working /middle class that are bearing the brunt of these taxpayer bailout stimuli would be better served for future generations from good old English common sense. London's previous mayor Ken Livingstone was quoted as saying, “We should shoot one banker a week until the others improve."

Now the US government is endeavouring to inject another $800 billion into several forms of sustainable programs and the right wing conservatives are bleating the indignities of burdensome debt and the need for tax cuts. I was really amused by the Republican response to the Democrats stimulus plan by the Governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal when he berated government interference by the Liberal ideal of keeping recipients of government funds held accountable with "...the strings attached to the funds coming to Louisiana in this legislation" (circa http://www.gov.state.la.us/).

NPR radio summarized it this way: Can you imagine the poor judgement of the Governor of the Great State of Louisiana to express his indignation of President Obama budgeting for disaster MONITORING use of tax dollars, when, he himself, is governor of a state whose very survival depends on the US Environmental Agency MONITORING hurricanes. Priceless.

I think the best line I heard all week was President Obama reminding the Conservative critics of his enormous efforts to revive the economy was due to "the era of profound irresponsibility" before he was elected. I am truely envious of Canadians with dual citizenship for no other reason than to be able to vote in America.

Speaking of quotes, check out this dog and pony from the owner of a Philadelphia Newspaper. “This restructuring is focused solely on our debt, not our operations. Our operations are sound and profitable.”
-Brian Tierney, chief executive officer of Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., the owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily, which have filed for bankruptcy protection.
Is that not priceless....lets think about what he said, business models would be child's play if they didn't have expenditures across the balance sheet from revenue. I don't know about you, but I am really amazed at how these folks keep treating us like dopes. Someone should tell him (or the sucker he plans to dump it on) the industry on the threshold of total obliteration, is not the banks or the auto industry...its print news.

Like I said, how can you beat this for entertainment. By the by, Happy Trails to Gerry Desharnais on finishing your work life with VIA Rail. I am driving to Vancouver around March 20 so Ill see you next month.
